Although safety rules are likely to be discussed in class, don't expect this to happen: Make your own rules specific to your child's situation. In a gentle but firm way, tell your children and teens, "These rules are a way to take care of ourselves." Reassure them that they can stay safe as long as they follow the family protocol. Review these safety topics several times throughout the year.

If Your Children Will be Walking to School

Walk the route with them to make sure they are okay and assess the route. Find out about traffic patterns and protections at crosswalks. Instruct your child to stay on sidewalks and main streets and not take shortcuts through alleys or areas with trees that appear deserted or less crowded.

Encourage Children to Look Out for Each Other

If an older brother attends the same school, they better walk together. If not, you can look for a responsible older child living in your neighborhood who might be pleased to be invited to accompany your son to school.

Truancy Policy

Do your research on the school's truancy policy. This will provide an additional measure of safety for your child if the school reports to the parents as soon as the teacher notifies an unexcused absence.
